Getting Started:

Get a documented diagnosis.

The first step in navigating the insurance maze is to make sure you have a written diagnosis from a medical or licensed health professional.

Determine what type of insurance you have.

Whether you have a PPO, HMO, EPO, or something else, find out the precise name of your plan.

Understand your specific policy and financial obligations.

Every policy’s scope is different. What are your co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket maximums? Do you need a referral? What providers are “in-network”? Knowledge is power — and understanding your policy will help you avoid confusion down the road.

Find a provider that fits your needs.

Not all ABA providers are created equally. You and your family will spend significant time with the provider, so find an organization you feel comfortable with and that understands the ins and outs of ABA.

State Funding

Every State Has Autism Services

Across the country, each state has its own way of providing services for children with autism. Each state may have different services, names for these systems, and ease of access. You should know there are autism resources available to help. The basic framework falls under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Contact your local Autism Society chapter to find out what type of support your state offers. They’re an excellent resource for up-to-date, local information.

School Funding

Every State Can Help You Navigate the Confusing World of School Funding

Federal law requires public schools to provide special education and related services to eligible students with disabilities at no cost to the parents.

Medicaid

Medicaid funding is different in each state.

Each state must provide some coverage for autism treatment through its Medicaid program, and each state decides which services are medically necessary. Depending on your state, applied behavior analysis (ABA) may or may not be covered.

Reach out to your local chapter of the Autism Society of America to find out what’s covered in your area.

Mandated coverage may be limited to specific age groups, number of visits, or other limitations. Some states have created robust networks of autism therapy providers, while other states have limited choices and significant waitlists.

Our intake and authorizations teams can help answer your questions.
